Current applied research and service projects:

  • Machine learning algorithms to assess geoscientific datasets: In this data science project, we are developing methods and machine learning algorithms to (semi-) automatically gather, analyse and interpret geological and geophysical datasets. These datasets are stored at swisstopo and are mainly coming from ongoing and future geothermal exploration projects funded by the Swiss Federation.

  • New heat flow map of the Swiss Molasse Basin: We will collect, compile, harmonise and correct existing and new temperature data of Switzerland in order to produce a new near-surface heat flow map of the Swiss North-Alpine Foreland Basin. The pilot area of this study is the Canton of Aargau for which we collaborate with the Geothermal Energy and Geofluids group of Prof. Martin Saar.

  • Assessment of natural sand and gravel resources of Switzerland: In this 3-year project we derive a methodology for assessing natural gravel and sand resources from available, published geodata on a nation-wide scale. Several resource qualification and quantification products like harmonised geological and resource maps as well as volume estimates will be established in selected pilot areas.

  • Geological evaluation of «Hartstein» units of Switzerland: In this project we assess and describe occurrences of siliceous limestone, Flysch limestone and Molasse sandstone («hardstone») used as raw material for the construction and maintenance of the national railway and road infrastructure. Key topics are volume estimates and visualisation of the spatial distribution of these occurrences.

  • Natural stones online: In this project, carried out by the ETH Material Hub (MATHUB) and supported by the Swiss Natural Stone Association (NVS), we write and review text contributions on natural stones from a geoscientific perspective. The resulting natural stone fact sheets are continuously made available in the online material database of the Material-Archiv.

  • Geological mapping of map sheet «Val Bregaglia»: in this 3-year project we produce the geological map sheet “Val Bregaglia” (Geologischer Atlas der Schweiz 1:25’000, sheet no. 1276) including the corresponding explanatory notes. The field area is located in the Central Alps in SE Switzerland.

  • Resources Information System Switzerland (RIS): we run a continously updated and freely accessible web portal (map.georessourcen.ethz.ch) providing detailed information on occurrences and quarries of mineral resources in Switzerland.
